Grand Prairie approves MEI Industrial Solutions relocation and duplex construction proposal

Grand Prairie City Council made significant strides in urban development during its meeting on July 14, 2025, approving key projects that promise to enhance the local economy and housing landscape.

The council unanimously approved a Special Use Permit (SUP) for MEI Industrial Solutions to establish a contractor shop at 502 West Oakdale Road. This facility will include outside storage for heavy equipment and is expected to create 5 to 10 jobs. The decision follows a recommendation from the Planning and Zoning Commission, which highlighted the project's alignment with the city's light industrial zoning and the minimal traffic impact anticipated from the operation. The council emphasized the importance of adhering to site improvement conditions, including the installation of a dumpster enclosure and compliance with paving standards for any future parking expansions.

In another notable decision, the council approved a comprehensive plan update that allows for the construction of a duplex at 2033 Galveston Road. This change from low-density to medium-density residential zoning aims to address the growing demand for housing in the area. The council acknowledged concerns regarding neighborhood consistency but noted that the proposed duplex would not significantly alter the character of the surrounding area, which has seen similar developments in the past.

Additionally, the council discussed a zoning amendment for a multifamily project at Sarah Jane and Forum, consolidating two existing planning developments into one. This move is intended to streamline the development process and maintain the existing multifamily zoning rights. The project is expected to include 343 units and various amenities, including a clubhouse and dog park. The council clarified that this amendment does not introduce new multifamily units but rather organizes existing zoning for better management.
