Developer David Baggett presents eco-friendly hotel plan at Fort Pierce meeting

A significant discussion on eco-friendly development took center stage at the Fort Pierce Planning Board meeting on July 14, 2025, as plans for a new hotel and parking garage were unveiled. The project, which is set to be developed in phases, aims to incorporate innovative stormwater management systems to enhance environmental sustainability.

David Baggett, representing the project, highlighted the integration of pervious surfaces and advanced stormwater treatment technologies. "We're working with a company that specializes in innovative stormwater technology," he stated, emphasizing the project's commitment to improving water quality and reducing nitrogen and phosphorus discharges into the nearby river.

Concerns were raised about the project's phasing, particularly regarding parking availability during construction. Baggett reassured the board that temporary parking solutions would be in place, stating, "We have the site across the street to accommodate us on the short term." The hotel, a Marriott Tribute brand, will feature on-site parking, with plans for 90 spaces dedicated to hotel guests once the garage is completed.

Public comments during the meeting included critiques of the landscaping plans, with one resident expressing concerns about the lack of shade trees and the overall eco-friendliness of the design. In response, Baggett noted that the landscaping plan includes a variety of species beyond just palm trees, aiming to enhance the site's ecological footprint.

The board ultimately approved the project, with conditions, signaling a step forward in Fort Pierce's development while addressing environmental concerns. The anticipated outcomes include improved stormwater management and increased green space, contributing to the city's ongoing efforts to balance growth with ecological responsibility.
