Brentwood Historic Board launches educational initiatives and digital archives project

Brentwood's commitment to preserving its rich history was front and center at the recent City Commission meeting, where officials highlighted a series of successful initiatives led by the Historic Commission. Among the standout projects was the "Brentwood Speaks" lecture series, which delved into the early development of local neighborhoods and has sparked significant community interest.

The meeting also showcased the publication of "Brentwood, Tennessee Turnpike History," authored by Joe Grossam and his committee. This book has been distributed to school libraries and the city library, ensuring that the town's history is accessible to younger generations.

In a notable restoration effort, the Historic Commission collaborated on the Brentvale project, which involved repurposing wood from a cabin at Crockett Park. A ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the completion of this project, celebrating the community's dedication to preserving its heritage.

Additionally, the Bowling Spring Academy classroom program invites local schoolchildren to experience a day in an 1845 schoolhouse, fostering a hands-on approach to history. Open houses at the academy are held monthly, further engaging the community.

The commission also reported on the successful digitization of historical records, creating a virtual archive accessible to the public, thanks to support from the Tennessee State Library. This initiative aims to make Brentwood's history more accessible and interactive.
