Hardee County plans HMGP grant for REA Road traffic signal upgrades

During the Hardee County Board of County Commissioners meeting on July 14, 2025, discussions centered on the application for a grant to upgrade traffic signals at the intersection of REA Road and US Highway 17. Ms. Laurie Ayers, the General Services Director, introduced Topanga Arana, the interim grants coordinator, who has been instrumental in the grant writing process.

The proposed upgrade is part of the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) and requires a 25% cash match from the county. This initiative is crucial as the existing traffic signal, installed over 20 years ago, has surpassed its typical lifespan of 15 to 20 years. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has indicated that the county is responsible for maintaining these signals, despite their location on a US highway, due to their presence within Hardee County.

Commissioner Chaney raised a question regarding the necessity of the upgrade, prompting Ms. Ayers to explain that the signal's age and condition necessitate the improvements. She noted that the county has already invested significantly in maintenance over the years, including repairs following damage from Hurricane Ian.

The discussion highlighted the importance of securing funding for infrastructure improvements, particularly as the county navigates its responsibilities in maintaining essential traffic control devices.
