Waco launches Creekside Community Village to tackle local homelessness

A bold initiative to combat homelessness in McLennan County is taking shape with the Creekside Community Village project, which aims to provide permanent housing and support for the area’s homeless population. During a recent Commissioners' Court meeting, project leaders emphasized that addressing homelessness requires more than just housing; it necessitates building a supportive community.

The project, inspired by Austin's successful Community First model, is designed to accommodate around 346 units, ensuring that every individual currently experiencing homelessness in McLennan County has a pathway to stable housing. The initiative is not a free handout; all residents will be required to pay rent, fostering a sense of responsibility and community involvement.

The chosen site for the village is a 68-acre tract on University Parks Drive, strategically located to access city utilities and services. Construction is already underway, with the first phase expected to be completed by late December 2025. The project has garnered significant financial backing, including nearly $11 million raised and a request for an additional $2 million from the county to match the city’s investment.

Leaders highlighted the importance of community involvement, noting that local churches and organizations are stepping up to support the initiative. The project not only aims to provide housing but also includes community amenities such as kitchens and gathering spaces, promoting a sense of dignity and belonging for residents.

As the project progresses, officials are optimistic about its potential to significantly reduce homelessness in McLennan County, with plans for ongoing support and services to help residents reintegrate into society.
