CSU San Marcos leaders unveil initiatives for economic mobility and workforce development

The recent meeting of the Assembly Committee on Economic Development, Growth, and Household Impact at California State University San Marcos highlighted the university's significant role in fostering economic mobility and addressing workforce needs in the region. President Ellen Neufeld emphasized the university's commitment to providing affordable education, particularly for first-generation students and military personnel, noting that over half of their students graduate without debt.

Neufeld pointed out that CSUSM is one of the fastest-growing campuses in the California State University system, with nearly 17,000 students enrolled. The university is ranked in the top 1% nationally for advancing social mobility, which underscores its mission to make higher education accessible to all. She shared that a bachelor's degree can significantly increase lifetime earnings, reinforcing the importance of education in the local economy.

A key focus of the meeting was the need for increased post-secondary education completions in the region. According to a study by the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation, the area must double its degree completions by 2030 to sustain economic growth. Neufeld highlighted the university's partnerships with local industries and community colleges to create innovative programs that meet these workforce demands.

The discussion also touched on housing challenges for students. Neufeld expressed gratitude for state support in affordable housing initiatives, which will soon provide 550 new beds for students, helping to alleviate housing shortages.

Dr. Carl Kimnitz, Provost of CSUSM, introduced the Innovation Hub, a collaborative space designed to connect students, faculty, and local industries to tackle real-world challenges. This hub fosters entrepreneurship and includes programs aimed at supporting low-income communities.
