Corey Harkey reports on successful firefighting efforts near Haskell Springs

During the recent Clarkdale Council meeting, a significant update was provided regarding a fire incident that occurred on July 3, sparked by a lightning strike near Yavapai College. Battalion Chief Corey Harkey from the Verde Valley Fire District detailed the rapid response and collaborative efforts that were crucial in managing the fire, which ultimately burned approximately 51.5 acres.

Chief Harkey began by expressing gratitude towards the Clarkdale Police Department, Verde Valley Fire Department, and various public assistance entities, including the National Forest Service, for their swift action in combating the blaze. The fire was reported shortly after noon, and initial responders included multiple fire engines and a water tender from the Verde Valley Fire District, as well as support from the City of Cottonwood.

Upon arrival, the fire crews quickly assessed the situation, noting that the fire was moving southward, away from residential areas on Haskell Springs Road. This fortunate development allowed the teams to focus on containment without immediate threat to homes. A unified command was established, coordinating efforts between local fire departments and the Forest Service.

The response included aerial support, with two helicopters delivering over 13,000 gallons of water to help control the flames. By the evening of July 2, around 56 personnel were engaged in firefighting efforts, which were aided by a decrease in wind and the natural topography of the area that limited fire spread.

The following day, additional personnel continued to monitor the situation until rain helped extinguish remaining hotspots. Chief Harkey emphasized the importance of the community's cooperation and the effectiveness of the emergency response, which showcased the preparedness of local agencies in handling such incidents.

As the meeting concluded, the council members acknowledged the successful management of the fire and the importance of ongoing vigilance in fire-prone areas, especially during the summer months. The collaborative efforts demonstrated during this incident highlight the critical role of community and emergency services in ensuring public safety.
