Prosser High School Basketball Golf Scramble shifts focus to community-building

The Prosser School District's recent school board meeting highlighted a significant shift in fundraising strategy for the inaugural Prosser High School Basketball Golf Scramble. The event, initially intended as a major fundraiser, is now being rebranded as a community-building activity, aiming to foster local engagement rather than solely focusing on financial gain.

Assistant coach Ryan Wood, who presented the revised plan, acknowledged concerns raised during the previous meeting about overextending the community's fundraising capacity and potentially conflicting with existing events, such as a golf fundraiser organized by a local hospital. In response, Wood and his team decided to eliminate sponsorship requests, opting instead for a more inclusive approach that encourages participation from as many teams as possible without the pressure of fundraising expectations.

"This is more about bringing the community together for some fun at the start of the school year," Wood stated, emphasizing the importance of community spirit over financial targets. The event is scheduled for September 6, just a day after the hospital's fundraiser, allowing for collaboration rather than competition.

The board also discussed the importance of clear communication with families regarding upcoming changes in classroom policies, particularly around device usage during lessons. A first reading of the new policy is set for next week, with the goal of informing parents before the school year begins.

As the district prepares for these initiatives, the focus remains on enhancing community ties and ensuring that educational policies align with the needs of students and families.
