Village plans construction of new well facility to replace outdated building

Cottage Grove is set to enhance its water infrastructure with the construction of a new well facility, following a recent Utility Commission meeting. The new building will replace an aging structure that has faced numerous maintenance issues, ensuring the community's water supply remains reliable and up to modern standards.

The new facility will cover approximately 555 square feet and will include essential components such as a pump room and two chemical storage rooms for chlorine and fluoride. This upgrade is crucial as the existing pump is nearing the end of its 20-year lifespan, and the new installation will feature a variable frequency drive to improve energy efficiency.

In addition to the building itself, the project will involve significant site work, including the installation of a new water main, repaving of the street, and landscaping to enhance the facility's appearance. The design incorporates a masonry block structure with stone and brick veneers, complemented by a hip-style metal roof to align with other local facilities.

The project is currently at about 60% design completion, with final designs expected to be finalized in the fall. The bidding process is planned for winter, aiming for construction to begin in early 2026 and conclude by early 2027. This timeline is designed to accommodate lead times for necessary equipment, including a new natural gas generator that will be installed outside the facility.

Security measures for the generator were discussed, with plans to include locked access panels and surveillance cameras to deter vandalism. While there was some consideration for solar panels, the commission noted that the small size of the building and the associated costs made this option less feasible.
