Lake Travis ISD seeks height variance for Educational Development Center expansion

In the heart of Lakeway, Texas, city officials gathered on July 10, 2025, to discuss significant developments impacting the community. The meeting, held at the local city hall, featured a key proposal from Lake Travis Independent School District (ISD) regarding an expansion of the Educational Development Center.

Joseph Duran, representing the project team, presented plans for a second-story addition to the existing center. This addition, however, comes with a request for a variance, as it would exceed the city’s maximum height limit of 32 feet, reaching up to 36 feet 10 inches. Duran explained that the variance is necessary due to the design constraints of the project, which aims to maintain a net zero impervious coverage on the site. This approach is crucial to avoid costly upgrades to water quality and detention ponds that would be required if the impervious coverage were increased.

The proposed addition is strategically located on the southern corner of the center, approximately 750 feet from Highway 620 and 500 feet from Kolmeyer Road. Duran emphasized that the building would not obstruct views from these roads, thanks to existing vegetation that provides natural screening. The design adheres to the district's guidelines, featuring a pitched metal roof, which is a standard across their facilities.

After a brief presentation, the floor was opened for public comments, but no residents chose to speak on the matter. The commission then moved to vote on the variance request, which was approved unanimously, allowing the project to proceed.

Following this discussion, the meeting transitioned to another agenda item concerning a view-blocking determination for a new home at 904 Palos Verdes Drive. This request, presented by Ryan Egan from Permit Specialists, sought approval for a structure that would reach a height of 31 feet 10 inches. The commission's deliberations on this matter are expected to continue in future meetings.
