Town Council discusses senior housing project funding and feasibility in Rhode Island

The Burrillville Town Council held a regular meeting on July 10, 2025, focusing on the development of senior housing and the associated funding opportunities. The meeting began with discussions on the public hearing process, emphasizing the importance of community input regarding the project and the needs of low- to moderate-income households.

Town officials highlighted the availability of Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding, which ranges from $11 million to $3.5 million, similar to last year. Burrillville is eligible to apply for these funds, which could significantly support the senior housing project. The project, estimated to cost around half a million dollars, aims to address the pressing need for senior housing in the region, where approximately 13,000 units are required.

The council noted that they had already secured a $250,000 predevelopment grant for engineering design work, which is crucial for determining the feasibility of the site and the number of units that can be constructed. Currently, the plan includes about 65 units specifically designed for seniors.

During the meeting, questions arose regarding the management of the completed units, with the organization "Naming Works" set to oversee the project once built. The council confirmed that they are prepared to move forward with the grant application process, having already conducted a public hearing with no objections raised.

Council members expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts of the task force and the community's proactive involvement in addressing the housing needs of seniors. The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of the project's importance and the commitment to continue engaging the public as the plans progress.
