Commission approves funding for Devil's Backbone Park Visitor Center and University research project

The Tennessee Joint Committee made significant strides in advancing state projects during its meeting on July 10, 2025, with a focus on enhancing infrastructure and facilities across various departments.

The highlight of the meeting was the approval of a $21.35 million project for the Devil's Backbone State Park. This initiative will construct a new visitor center, maintenance facility, campground, and related amenities, aimed at improving the park experience for visitors. The project is part of the fiscal year 2025-2026 capital budget and received unanimous support from the committee members.

In addition, the Department of Children's Services secured approval for the final construction funding for two new secure facilities in Nashville. The John S. Wilder hardware secure facility will accommodate 72 beds, while a staff secure facility will house 48 beds, both designed with future expansion in mind. This funding is crucial for executing a contract with a construction manager and general contractor.

The meeting also addressed the renovation of the old Library and Archives Building and the Supreme Court Building, with a request for full construction funding. The contract was awarded to Skanska USA Building Incorporated, following a competitive selection process.

Lastly, the University of Memphis presented its ambitious $75 million research modernization project, which aims to upgrade 115,000 square feet of research space across multiple disciplines. This project is expected to significantly enhance the university's research capabilities and infrastructure.
