Fairfax City is taking significant strides towards enhancing safety and mobility with the launch of the Move Fairfax City initiative, which encompasses a comprehensive safety action plan, a pedestrian master plan, and an Old Town circulation study. During a recent City Council work session, transportation planner Chloe Ritter outlined the project's ambitious goals aimed at improving pedestrian safety and overall traffic conditions throughout the city.
The initiative is driven by existing long-term plans that emphasize the need for safer streets and improved walkability. Ritter explained that while these plans set the vision, they lack specific project priorities. The Move Fairfax City project aims to fill this gap by identifying actionable steps to implement safety improvements and enhance pedestrian infrastructure.
A key component of the initiative is the safety action plan, which focuses on reducing severe injuries and fatalities across all modes of transportation. Ryan Sharp, a member of the consulting team, highlighted the plan's proactive approach, which includes analyzing crash data to identify high-risk areas and implementing infrastructure improvements. The goal is to create a safer environment for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike.
The pedestrian master plan will work in tandem with the safety action plan, addressing mobility issues and enhancing pedestrian comfort. This plan will assess factors such as traffic stress levels and the availability of safe crossing facilities, ensuring that pedestrian needs are prioritized in future developments.
The Old Town circulation study will delve deeper into creating a pedestrian-friendly environment in the downtown core, aligning with the vision set forth in the Old Town Small Area Plan. This study will explore ways to improve connectivity and traffic flow, ultimately fostering a more vibrant and accessible urban space.
The initiative is backed by a $400,000 federal grant from the Safe Streets for All program, supplemented by $150,000 in local funding. This financial support will enable the city to tackle multiple planning needs simultaneously, making the process more efficient and cost-effective.
As the project progresses, community engagement will be crucial. The city plans to involve residents in discussions about priorities and gather feedback to ensure that the final plans reflect the needs and desires of the community. The anticipated outcomes include a list of prioritized projects ready for implementation, positioning Fairfax City for future funding opportunities.
With these plans in motion, Fairfax City is poised to make significant improvements in safety and mobility, setting a precedent for other municipalities to follow.
