Harrisonburg unveils Link project enhancing transportation and parking solutions

A transformative development project is set to reshape downtown Harrisonburg, as the Planning Commission discussed the Link project during a recent meeting. This ambitious initiative promises to enhance transportation, parking, and community spaces, making it a significant addition to the city.

Key among the project's benefits is the proposed transportation improvement. The Link will address a critical East-West circulation issue by extending a new public street, connecting South Main and South Liberty. This new route will replace outdated connections, improving access for both residents and visitors. Additionally, the project aligns with the upcoming Liberty Street cycle track, offering secure bike storage and direct access to bike paths.

Parking was another focal point of the discussion. The Link is designed to accommodate all resident parking needs within an on-site structure, with plans to charge separately for parking to encourage alternative transportation methods. This approach is particularly timely, as the development of the Build Our Park space will eliminate approximately 38 parking spaces. To mitigate this loss, the developer has committed to providing below-market rate parking for up to 65 spaces, which will be under city control for municipal use during off-peak hours.

The project also emphasizes civic space synergy, integrating seamlessly with the Build Our Park design. It will create multiple pedestrian connections to the park and enhance the area with artistic features like murals and creative lighting, fostering a vibrant community atmosphere.

Finally, the Link aims to strengthen community cohesion by serving as a visual waypoint between James Madison University and downtown, enhancing the connection between these key areas.
