Sedona Water Reclamation Plan outlines new irrigation and recharge well initiatives

During the Sedona City Council meeting on July 9, 2025, significant discussions centered around the city's wastewater management and effluent disposal strategies. The council reviewed a comprehensive plan aimed at optimizing effluent disposal methods, which includes the abandonment of 200 acres of irrigation in Area 4, known as the Dells, while maintaining 27 acres of wetlands that serve as a community park.

The plan proposes the construction of up to six recharge wells, with two already built in 2017 to enhance effluent management capacity. The council emphasized the importance of having these additional wells operational before proceeding with the abandonment of irrigation to ensure a reliable water supply.

A key focus was on the potential delivery of reclaimed water to city parks and schools. The council outlined three phases for this initiative. The first phase involves supplying reclaimed water to the high school, with the possibility of extending this service to Cultural Park with minimal additional infrastructure. The second phase would expand delivery to Sunset Park, while the final phase aims to cover multiple parks and schools, including Jamieson Park and Posse Grounds Park.

Concerns were raised regarding the costs associated with these projects, particularly in relation to the rate structure for reclaimed water. The council acknowledged that reclaimed water rates are typically lower than potable water rates, which could encourage usage. However, they also recognized the need for a thorough assessment of costs and demand before moving forward.

The discussions highlighted the city's commitment to sustainable water management practices while balancing community needs and environmental considerations. As the council continues to evaluate these proposals, the outcomes will significantly impact Sedona's water resource management and community infrastructure in the coming years.
