Residents challenge funeral home plans citing access and property concerns

A proposed funeral home in San Antonio sparked significant discussion at the Planning Commission meeting on July 9, 2025, as concerns about its intended use and access to neighboring properties came to light.

Commission members questioned whether the facility would serve solely as a chapel or if it would include funeral preparation services, such as a crematory. One member expressed skepticism, stating, “I find it hard to believe it's just a chapel only because there certainly is gonna be, you know, a casket or body there for whatever ceremony.” This uncertainty highlighted the need for clearer information regarding the facility's operations.

Adding to the conversation, Tamara Ricalde, a property owner adjacent to the proposed site, voiced her support for the project but raised a critical issue regarding access to her land. Ricalde explained that her property is currently landlocked due to the separation from the proposed funeral home site. She requested that any changes made include an easement to ensure access to her property, emphasizing, “We are not necessarily opposed. We just would like to be considered because we are effectively landlocked.”

The meeting underscored the importance of transparency in development proposals and the need for consideration of neighboring property rights. As discussions continue, the Planning Commission will need to address these concerns to move forward with the project.
