Star Transit secures $165,000 funding for fiscal year 2025 transportation services

Balch Springs is set to enhance its public transportation services following the approval of a $165,000 funding request for Star Transit during the Economic Development Corporation (EDC) Type B Board meeting on July 9, 2025. This funding will support transportation services for the upcoming fiscal year, marking a continued partnership between the city and Star Transit, which has been operational in the area for over a decade.

Tommy Henricks, the executive director of Star Transit, expressed gratitude for the collaboration with the city and highlighted the agency's commitment to providing safe and affordable mobility options. The agency serves a wide area, including Balch Springs, and has reported over 215,000 rides annually. The funding will help maintain and expand services, including demand-response transportation and the Midtown Express route.

Antonio Harris, the transportation director, detailed the current services, which include a demand-response system allowing riders to book rides in advance. The service operates Monday through Friday, with extended hours on weekends. The fare structure is designed to be affordable, with discounts available for seniors, veterans, and disabled riders.

A notable addition to the service is the integration of UberX, which aims to reduce wait times for riders. This option allows clients to opt for Uber when Star Transit vehicles are unavailable within a reasonable timeframe. The integration has reportedly improved service efficiency, with average wait times decreasing significantly.

The board also discussed the slight increase in funding, which reflects rising operational costs. The funding request for the next fiscal year includes a modest increase to accommodate these expenses while ensuring continued service quality.

In addition to transportation funding, the board addressed other community needs, including a proposal for construction upgrades at Uhren Park, further demonstrating the city's commitment to enhancing public amenities.
