The Delray Beach City Commission made a significant move towards preserving the city's architectural heritage by approving the use of Art Deco design for a new mixed-use building at 398 Northeast Sixth Avenue. The resolution, passed during the July 8, 2025 meeting, allows the project to proceed with its site plan application, marking a step forward in the revitalization of the Central Business District.
Bradley Miller from Urban Design Studio introduced the project, highlighting the collaboration with REG Architects, led by Rick Gonzales. The proposed four-story structure will feature a blend of modern functionality and classic Art Deco elements, which are integral to Delray Beach's architectural identity. The design includes a ground floor with retail space and parking, while the upper levels will house eight condominiums, complete with a rooftop terrace and pool.
The architects emphasized the importance of incorporating distinctive Art Deco features, such as flat roofs with ornamental parapets, decorative finials, and curved entrances. These elements not only pay homage to the city's historical context but also aim to enhance the urban fabric of the area.
The commission's approval signals a commitment to maintaining Delray Beach's unique character while accommodating contemporary urban living. As the project moves forward, it is expected to contribute positively to the community's visual and cultural identity, reinforcing the city's reputation as a vibrant and eclectic destination.
