Marin County promotes Plastic Free July to reduce single use plastic waste

La Famina provided practical tips for residents to participate in the challenge, such as buying in bulk at local grocery stores, using reusable containers when dining out, and opting for secondhand clothing to reduce plastic waste. She emphasized that the goal is not perfection but rather to be more intentional about consumer choices.

Kimberly Scheible, Executive Director of 0 Waste Marin, reinforced the importance of the initiative, noting that only 9% of plastic produced has been successfully recycled. She urged residents to reduce their demand for plastic products and highlighted the environmental and health risks associated with microplastics, which have been found in food and water supplies.

The meeting also introduced Julie Bryant, the new waste management program manager, who will oversee compliance with state mandates and promote waste reduction initiatives within the county. The county's efforts include improved waste sorting stations and employee training programs aimed at fostering a culture of sustainability.
