A powerful plea for local access to clinical trials took center stage at the Hawaii House Committee on Health & Homelessness meeting on January 31, 2025. Susan, a cancer patient, shared her personal journey through eight different treatments over the past 15 months, emphasizing the critical need for clinical trials on the islands.
"Access to those clinical trials currently is on the mainland," she explained, highlighting the emotional and financial toll of traveling away from family for treatment. Susan's testimony underscored the urgency of House Bill 1085, which aims to secure funding for a cancer center that would bring these vital clinical trials closer to home.
She described the isolation and stress of leaving her support system behind during treatment, stating, "The support of your Ohana is critical during this time." The financial burden of travel, lodging, and extended treatment further complicates the situation for many patients, especially those from neighboring islands like Molokai.
Susan's heartfelt appeal resonated with the committee, as she urged members to support the bill to save lives and provide essential care within the community. The meeting also featured written testimonies from 18 supporters and 7 opponents of the bill, indicating a significant public interest in the issue.
As the committee deliberates, the potential impact of this legislation could reshape cancer care in Hawaii, offering hope and support to patients in their most challenging times.
