Airport plans $120K for air traffic control and safety upgrades

The Georgetown workshop held on July 8, 2025, focused on the Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) for the upcoming year, with significant discussions surrounding airport infrastructure and operational enhancements.

The meeting began with a detailed overview of the CIP schedule, highlighting key projects and their associated costs. Notable allocations included $120,000 for air traffic control tower equipment, $560 for the replacement of the cutter north roof, $40,000 for a displaced threshold runway extension, and $20,000 for fuel farm upgrades.

Additionally, two service requests were presented to improve operational effectiveness at the airport. The first request involved hiring an administrative assistant to enhance customer service and manage various administrative duties, including overseeing the current 168 hangar leases and 213 tie-downs. Currently, part-time staff assist with these responsibilities, and the new hire is expected to streamline operations.

The second request focused on the installation of Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADS-B) systems in all airport vehicles. This technology functions similarly to a transponder, allowing aircraft to track the precise locations of ground vehicles. The implementation of ADS-B is anticipated to enhance situational awareness, reduce runway incursions, and improve overall safety for airport staff.

Following the airport discussions, the meeting transitioned to stormwater management topics, indicating a continued focus on infrastructure and environmental considerations in Georgetown.
