Commissioners discuss $7.3M sheriff's remodel project and funding shortfall

Rockwall County officials are moving forward with a significant remodel project for the Sheriff's Office, which is expected to enhance local law enforcement capabilities and emergency management services. During the Commissioners Court meeting on July 8, 2025, Commissioner Stacy outlined the project's scope and financial details, emphasizing its alignment with the county's strategic plan.

The remodel project has a total estimated cost of $7.3 million, which encompasses construction, furniture, fixtures, and design costs. Currently, the county has secured $5.4 million through various funding sources, including remaining jail bonds and transfers from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and the general fund. However, this leaves a shortfall of $1.8 million that will need to be addressed.

Commissioner Stacy highlighted the importance of the remodel, stating that it is not merely an upgrade but a necessary expansion to meet the demands of population growth and to ensure that law enforcement agencies can effectively train and respond to emergencies within the county. The project aims to improve facilities that support dispatch services and enhance the overall justice system.

As the meeting progressed, the court discussed the General Maximum Price (GMP) contract with SCI Construction, which will handle the building phase of the project. Additional contracts related to furniture and fixtures were also on the agenda, indicating a comprehensive approach to the remodel.
