Mr Johnson proposes Nanilchik Recreational Service area to fund local pool

A proposal to establish a new recreational service area in Nanilchik took center stage at the Kenai Peninsula Borough Policies and Procedures Committee meeting on July 8, 2025. The initiative, spearheaded by Mr. Johnson, aims to secure funding for the local pool and other community recreational needs, contingent upon voter approval.

During the meeting, Mr. Johnson explained that a group of residents had approached him to sponsor the creation of this service area, which would help alleviate financial pressures on the Ninelchik pool. He acknowledged the challenges ahead, particularly after a previous funding motion failed to pass, which could complicate the financial landscape for this year.

Assembly member Mr. Dunn raised critical questions regarding the potential implications of using borough funds for facilities located on school district property. He highlighted concerns about maintaining a "firewall" between borough funding and school district contributions, which could affect overall funding caps. This issue has been a point of contention, especially for the Susan B. English School, which has been actively seeking funds to keep its pool operational.

In response, representatives discussed the operational complexities of managing pools, particularly regarding utility costs and the need for separate management to avoid complications with funding. They emphasized the importance of careful monitoring of utility usage and operational efficiency to ensure sustainability.

The committee's discussions underscored the community's commitment to enhancing recreational services while navigating the financial and logistical challenges that come with such initiatives.
