Commissioner Ladina Bolton proclaims July as National Disability Pride Month in DeKalb County

DeKalb County has officially proclaimed July as National Disability Pride Month, a significant recognition aimed at honoring the achievements and experiences of the disability community. During the Board of Commissioners meeting on July 8, 2025, Commissioner Dr. Ladina Bolton emphasized the importance of challenging assumptions about individuals with disabilities and promoting their full inclusion in society.

Dr. Bolton shared a powerful narrative inspired by a commercial highlighting the capabilities of individuals with Down syndrome. She stressed that assumptions can limit potential, urging the community to foster an environment where everyone is encouraged to thrive. "Assume that I can, and maybe I will," she quoted, reinforcing the message that support and belief in abilities can lead to empowerment.

The meeting also featured representatives from Georgia State University's bridal program and Peter and Paul's Place, both of which are dedicated to enhancing opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Dr. Bolton praised the bridal program for redefining inclusive education and providing essential resources for students, while also acknowledging the vital support offered by Peter and Paul's Place in fostering independence and dignity.

The proclamation highlights the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, which was signed into law on July 26, 1990.
