Georgia State University honors community leaders for disability advocacy efforts

The DeKalb County Board of Commissioners held a regular meeting on July 8, 2025, where several significant topics were discussed, including a special recognition for individuals involved in a local program supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities.

The meeting commenced with a presentation of proclamations honoring Lois and Mikael for their contributions to the Bridal program at Georgia State University. Mikael Tyru, the employment coordinator for the program, addressed the attendees, highlighting the mission of the program to provide academic coordination and employment support for individuals with intellectual disabilities. He emphasized the importance of Disability Pride Month, which commemorates the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a landmark legislation that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities.

Mikael expressed gratitude towards Dr. B and the team for their welcoming approach and commitment to inclusivity, stating, “It’s refreshing to meet people who welcome our folks with open arms.” He also noted the involvement of students from the IDeA program in community engagement efforts, which allowed them to learn about government operations firsthand.

Following the proclamations, the meeting included a moment for photographs to commemorate the recognition of the honorees. The atmosphere was one of appreciation and collaboration, with a focus on fostering an inclusive community.
