Maui County Council approves land donations for public and community projects

Maui County's Council made significant strides in land acquisition and community development during its regular meeting on July 8, 2025. The council unanimously approved the acceptance of two parcels of land in Lanai City from First Hawaiian Bank, totaling over 24,000 square feet. This decision, driven by the Water and Infrastructure Committee, aims to explore potential public uses for the properties, including office space for county staff and short-term housing for visiting service providers.

Member Cook emphasized the importance of these acquisitions, noting that any land secured by the county is vital for community input and development, especially on an island where 98% of land is privately owned. The council's approval reflects a commitment to enhancing community resources and infrastructure.

In addition to the Lanai City parcels, the council also moved forward with the acquisition of 1.724 acres in Lahaina for $1.95 million. This land will support critical infrastructure projects, including roadway extensions and the potential relocation of a Hawaiian Electric substation. Public Works Director Molina highlighted the unique circumstances in Lahaina, advocating for the acquisition despite the appraisal being lower than the asking price.

The meeting also addressed the appointment of Kelly Shane Davison to the Salary Commission, with members expressing confidence in his integrity and experience. This appointment is crucial as the council must finalize it by July 12, 2025.

Lastly, the council discussed the intent to convey part of the Kahului Community Center Parkside to Hale Makoa Health Services for a workforce rental housing project, indicating a focus on addressing housing needs in the community.
