Molokai Council approves renewable energy lease for Kualapu'u Community Center

A significant step towards renewable energy in Maui County was taken during the recent council meeting, where members discussed a resolution to authorize a lease for a community-based renewable energy project at Kualapu'u Park and Community Center on Molokai. The resolution, numbered 25-140, aims to facilitate a solar energy initiative that will cover four carport areas, providing shade for the parking lot while generating power for approximately 150 households.

Member Rollins Fernandez, who moved to adopt the resolution, emphasized the urgency of the project, noting its time-sensitive nature. He highlighted that the initiative is spearheaded by Oahu Energy Cooperative Molokai, a nonprofit cooperative, and involves collaboration with Shake Energy Collaborative. The council had previously reviewed the project during a committee meeting, where they received valuable input from local representatives and community members.

The resolution was met with no objections from council members, indicating strong support for the initiative. This project not only aims to enhance energy accessibility for residents but also aligns with broader goals of sustainability and community resilience in Maui County. As the council moves forward, the anticipated outcomes include increased renewable energy production and a positive impact on local households.
