DeKalb County focuses on affordable housing initiatives for veterans and low-income families

In a recent DeKalb County PECS Committee meeting, officials gathered to discuss pressing housing issues, particularly the challenges faced by veterans seeking affordable housing. The atmosphere was charged with a sense of urgency as committee members explored the complexities of housing availability and quality in the region.

One of the focal points of the discussion was the Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) program, which provides vouchers to veterans. Despite having over 700 vouchers available, the utilization rate had been alarmingly low, with only about 350 veterans successfully finding housing. However, recent changes in the VA's approach have led to an increase in support for veterans, allowing more individuals to access these vital resources. Committee members emphasized the importance of collaboration among county staff, landlords, and housing officials to improve outcomes for veterans.

Commissioner Belton highlighted the need for high-quality affordable housing, noting that while DeKalb County has affordable options, many are not up to standard. The committee discussed ongoing efforts to enhance housing quality and increase the availability of units, particularly for families in need. With a staggering waitlist of over 20,000 applicants, the demand for housing far exceeds the current supply, prompting officials to seek innovative solutions.

The conversation also touched on the potential for transitioning families from rental units to homeownership, with 31 families having achieved this milestone through the program. However, the committee acknowledged the challenges posed by the current housing market and the need for more comprehensive support systems to help families break the cycle of poverty.

As the meeting concluded, there was a palpable sense of determination among the officials to tackle these housing challenges head-on. With plans to explore housing opportunity bonds and other initiatives, DeKalb County is poised to make significant strides in addressing the critical need for quality affordable housing, ensuring that all residents, especially veterans, have a place to call home.
