Wylie Storm baseball team honored ahead of Cooperstown tournament

The Wylie City Council meeting on July 8, 2025, celebrated the achievements of the Wylie Storm baseball team and recognized long-serving volunteers from the Wylie Baseball and Softball Association.

The meeting began with a heartfelt acknowledgment of the Wylie Storm, a 12-year-old baseball team preparing for the prestigious Cooperstown tournament in New York. Assistant Coach Eli Gutierrez shared the excitement of the upcoming competition, which features 104 teams and offers a unique experience for young athletes. The team will stay in barracks, fostering camaraderie and teamwork without parental involvement, allowing the players to fully immerse themselves in the baseball experience.

Mayor and council members expressed pride in the team's accomplishments and the life lessons that sports provide, such as handling success and failure. The mayor emphasized the importance of teamwork and resilience, encouraging the young athletes to embrace the journey ahead.

Following the recognition of the baseball team, the council honored three dedicated volunteers from the Wylie Baseball and Softball Association for their extensive service. Lance Wallace, the association's president, presented plaques to Ricardo Salceda for 25 years of service, and Matthew Willis and Lynn Greg for 30 years each. Their commitment to the community and youth sports was celebrated, highlighting the significant impact of volunteers in fostering a positive environment for young athletes.
