Garland Mayor honors DFW Asian American Soccer Tournament for cultural unity

Under the bright lights of Garland's city hall, a spirit of unity and celebration filled the air as the city council recognized the DFW Asian American Soccer Tournament for its significant contributions to the community. Mayor Dylan Hedrick opened the meeting by highlighting the tournament's role in fostering cultural connections among diverse Asian communities through the universal language of soccer.

The sixth annual tournament, hosted by Vietnam United FC, took place in June and showcased 19 teams from seven states, representing five Asian countries: Vietnam, Japan, Korea, China, and Nepal. Since its inception in 2019, the tournament has become a symbol of cultural unity and sportsmanship, continuing annually except for 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Mayor Hedrick emphasized how the event not only celebrates the rich heritage of Asian communities but also enhances the cultural fabric of Garland and the broader Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Jimmy Chuanz, representing Vietnam United, accepted the proclamation with gratitude, reflecting on the organization's journey from a small soccer team to a nonprofit that empowers the Asian American community through sports, culture, and civic engagement. He poignantly noted that 2025 marks the 50th anniversary of the fall of Saigon, a moment that resonates deeply with many in the community who came to the United States as refugees.

In his heartfelt remarks, Chuanz acknowledged the collective efforts of volunteers, players, and supporters who have helped build bridges and promote youth engagement through soccer. He concluded by expressing a commitment to continue fostering a stronger and more united Garland, one game, one act of service, and one celebration at a time.
