Galveston Commission approves license for public right of way use at 2402 Market

In a recent meeting of the Galveston Planning Commission, significant discussions centered around a request for a license to use public right-of-way for ongoing renovations at 2402 Market Street. The applicant, Catherine Hughes, is seeking permission to install construction fencing and store materials as part of the building's renovation, which is currently underway. This request follows a previous deferral from the June meeting, allowing the applicant to provide additional information.

The proposed project will involve the installation of fencing along the south and east facades of the building, which will temporarily occupy five metered parking spaces—two along Market Street and three along 24th Street. The applicant has requested that this arrangement remain in place for approximately three months, until November 2025. The cost for the use of these parking spaces is set at $141.75 per week per space, totaling around $708.75 weekly.

During the meeting, commissioners raised concerns about the impact of construction on pedestrian access, particularly in a busy area known for its foot traffic. Hughes assured the commission that efforts would be made to minimize disruption, including maintaining clear pathways for pedestrians and removing cones when the area is not in use. She emphasized her commitment to keeping the site safe and accessible, especially during peak tourist seasons.

The commission unanimously approved the request, subject to specific conditions, reflecting a balance between facilitating necessary renovations and preserving public access. In addition to the Market Street project, the commission also reviewed a request for a deck addition and new staircase at 25611 Snowy Egret Drive.
