Mayor Wells proclaims July 2025 as Parks and Recreation Month in El Cajon

The City of El Cajon held a council meeting on July 8, 2025, where the primary focus was the proclamation of July as Parks and Recreation Month. Mayor Bill Wells opened the meeting by inviting Parks and Recreation Director Adam Traunrode to the podium to accept the proclamation.

During the proclamation, Mayor Wells emphasized the importance of parks and recreation in enhancing community life throughout the year. He highlighted that these programs contribute to healthier communities, support individuals with disabilities, and improve the overall mental and emotional well-being of residents. The mayor noted that over 100,000 patrons visit local parks and recreation facilities each month, underscoring the department's commitment to maintaining clean and safe environments for families.

The proclamation also pointed out the economic benefits of parks and recreation, including increased property values, expanded local tax bases, and reduced crime rates. Mayor Wells encouraged residents to engage with their local parks and participate in various programs, aligning with this year's theme, "Build Together, Play Together."

Director Traunrode expressed gratitude for the recognition and shared a brief video showcasing the department's activities. He detailed the department's mission to support youth and families through the maintenance of 17 parks and 7 recreation centers, covering over 120 acres. The department offers a wide range of year-round programming, including aquatics, youth sports, and community events such as the annual July Fourth fireworks and Hauntfest.

The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of the city's commitment to enhancing the quality of life through its parks and recreation initiatives, inviting all residents to take part in the celebrations throughout the month.
