Amarillo City Council awards $42,500 contract for police chief search consulting

Amarillo City Council has taken a significant step towards enhancing public safety by approving a professional services agreement for the search of a new Chief of Police. During the regular meeting on July 8, 2025, the council unanimously agreed to engage Public Sector Search Consulting, a firm specializing in public safety recruitment, for a fee of $42,500 plus expenses.

The decision comes as part of a structured approach to ensure a thorough and effective search process. The firm, which has a strong track record with over 100 successful searches nationwide, will lead the recruitment efforts, including stakeholder interviews and public engagement meetings. This will allow community members and city staff to voice their expectations and desired qualities for the new chief.

Gary Peterson, the firm’s president and CEO, will oversee the project. With a career spanning 30 years in public safety, Peterson has previously managed searches for major cities, including Dallas and Seattle. The council anticipates that the search process will take approximately 90 to 120 days, potentially resulting in a new chief being appointed by late 2025.

In addition to the chief search, the council discussed other agenda items, including a change order approval related to ongoing city projects. The meeting underscored the council's commitment to transparency and community involvement in key public safety decisions.
