Commissioners approve $3.4M renovation for juvenile detention center improvements

Bexar County Commissioners approved a significant renovation project for the juvenile detention center during their meeting on July 8, 2025. The court voted to execute a purchase order with Waterman Construction LLC for a total of $3,464,569, aimed at enhancing facilities at the center located at 600 Mission Road.

The renovation will include crucial interior improvements, particularly to the medical area and the installation of a more robust ceiling structure. This upgrade is designed to prevent damage caused by occupants standing on tables and pulling down suspended ceilings, which has led to ongoing maintenance costs. Additional enhancements will involve renovations to building enclosures, showers, and windows.

Commissioner Dan Curry presented the project details, highlighting the importance of these improvements for the juvenile department's retention and recruitment program. The court received four bids for the project, ensuring competitive pricing and quality coverage.
