Dickinson council approves $21K project to enhance access for Wellness First Medical Center

The Dickinson City Council has taken a significant step to support local businesses by approving a $21,000 infrastructure improvement project aimed at enhancing access to the Wellness First Medical Center. This initiative comes in response to concerns raised by the center's owner, who reported that new medians installed by TxDOT have made it difficult for elderly patients to reach the facility, leading to a decline in business and potential job losses.

During the meeting, it was highlighted that the medical center, which is still recovering from the impacts of the pandemic, has seen a drop in patient visits due to accessibility issues. The owner expressed that many elderly patients are avoiding the center because they struggle to navigate the new traffic patterns created by the medians. This situation has not only affected patient care but has also resulted in unsafe driving conditions, with some individuals resorting to driving on the grass next to the property.

The approved funding will be provided in the form of a forgivable loan, which is expected to help retain three full-time jobs at the medical center and potentially create new positions as the business expands its services. The project was initially presented to the Economic Development Corporation (EDC) in January and underwent a thorough review process, including a public hearing in March, which received no opposition.

This funding is part of a broader $75,000 budget allocation dedicated to business retention and expansion projects in Dickinson, reflecting the city’s commitment to supporting local enterprises and ensuring their sustainability. The council's decision underscores the importance of accessible healthcare services for the community, particularly for vulnerable populations like the elderly.
