Hidalgo County libraries achieve accreditation with over 1M items in circulation

During the recent Hidalgo County Commissioner’s Court meeting on July 8, 2025, significant updates regarding the county's public libraries were presented, highlighting their achievements and community impact. The meeting featured representatives from various libraries, including the Doctor P. Garcia Memorial Library and the newly established Palm View Municipal Library, who collectively celebrated the accreditation of all 13 public libraries in Hidalgo County by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission.

This accreditation signifies that the libraries have met their operational goals for 2024, which is a notable accomplishment for the county's commitment to enhancing public access to information and resources. The libraries reported a staggering total of 1,000,059 physical items available for circulation, including books, videos, and audio materials, with a total circulation of $797,213. The meeting also emphasized the libraries' role in community engagement, with over 511,000 library cards issued and more than 573,000 visits recorded in the past year. The libraries provided free access to computers and Wi-Fi, with patrons accessing computers approximately 186,000 times and Wi-Fi services nearly 830,000 times.

Programming for various age groups was another focal point of the discussion. The libraries hosted a total of 5,867 programs throughout the year, attracting nearly 206,000 attendees. These programs catered to toddlers, children, teens, and adults, with initiatives aimed at promoting literacy and community involvement. Notably, the summer reading program alone engaged over 1,400 participants, showcasing the libraries' efforts to encourage reading among youth.
