Palm View Library Director Tigrina announces new programs and accreditation success

In the heart of Hidalgo County, a recent meeting of the Commissioner’s Court brought to light the vital role local libraries play in fostering community engagement and education. Jaime J. Tigrina, the library director from Palm View, addressed the court, highlighting the library's impressive growth and its commitment to serving over 15,000 residents, alongside visitors from neighboring areas.

Tigrina proudly shared the library's new initiatives, including nutrition classes, gardening programs, and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, all designed to meet the diverse needs of the community. The library's accreditation by the Texas State Library Archives Commission, effective September 1, marks a significant milestone, paving the way for its integration into the Hidalgo County Library System. This achievement underscores the library's dedication to building stronger, more informed communities.

However, the meeting also revealed a pressing need for increased funding. One commissioner emphasized the importance of supporting libraries, especially for the 40% of the population living in rural areas without access to physical library facilities. The call for financial assistance resonated strongly, as it was noted that many residents rely heavily on digital library resources.

As the meeting transitioned into closed session discussions, the court addressed various legal matters, including pending litigation and settlement agreements. Notably, the court approved settlements for two cases, one for $18,000 and another for $25,000, reflecting the ongoing legal responsibilities of the county.
