Newcastle City Council approves grants for community events and support initiatives

New Castle County's Administrative-Finance Committee made significant strides in community support during their recent meeting on July 8, 2025. The committee approved several grants aimed at enhancing local unity and providing essential services.

One of the key decisions was the approval of a $500 grant to support an annual neighborhood community gathering. This event fosters unity among residents who share a common school background and have raised their children together. The funding will help maintain this important tradition.

Additionally, the committee granted $1,500 to the Delaware Gender Collective to support the historic Newcastle Pride Market. This grassroots organization has successfully expanded the market from 35 vendors in its inaugural fall event to 55 vendors in the spring, showcasing the growing support for the LGBTQIA community in the area.

The Hope Dining Room, which provides meals to those in need, received a $2,500 grant to purchase necessary supplies. This funding was moved from Councilman Sheldon’s account, highlighting the collaborative effort to assist local organizations.

The Centerville Civic Association also benefited from the meeting, receiving a $2,500 grant for tree work in Canby Park. This initiative aims to enhance the local environment and community spaces.

Lastly, the Western District Advisory Council secured a $2,500 grant to support their annual events, including National Night Out, which promotes community-police relations.

These approvals reflect the committee's commitment to fostering community engagement and supporting essential services in New Castle County. As these initiatives move forward, they are expected to strengthen community ties and improve the quality of life for residents.
