Route 9 Community Alliance discusses emergency management plans during power outages

During the recent New Castle County Public Safety Committee meeting, community concerns about emergency preparedness were front and center, particularly regarding power outages and the need for cooling centers during extreme heat events.

Rob Bullock, president of the Route 9 Community Alliance Coalition, raised a pressing issue about the lack of backup power generation in the community. He recounted personal experiences of enduring uncomfortable nights during blackouts and inquired whether the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) has plans to address such situations. Bullock suggested utilizing DART buses as mobile cooling centers equipped with air conditioning to help residents during power outages.

In response, Chris Hodgson, the coordinator for emergency management, assured attendees that the OEM has protocols in place for emergency situations, including the establishment of reception centers for those affected by power outages. He explained that while isolated power outages may not immediately trigger a state of emergency, the county is prepared to respond effectively. Hodgson highlighted partnerships with the Delaware Emergency Management Agency and local nonprofits like the American Red Cross, which can assist in setting up temporary shelters at firehouses for residents without power.

The discussion underscored the importance of community preparedness and the need for accessible resources during emergencies. As New Castle County continues to develop its emergency response strategies, the input from residents like Bullock plays a crucial role in shaping effective solutions that prioritize public safety and comfort.
