Traffic Safety Commission recommends Tyler Street sidewalk improvement to city council

The City of Carlsbad's Traffic and Mobility Commission meeting on July 7, 2025, spotlighted pressing safety concerns in local neighborhoods, particularly regarding traffic conditions on Tyler Street. "We need to slow the traffic down on Tyler Street," she insisted, calling for stop signs and better signage to reinforce the 25 mph speed limit.

The commission discussed the Tyler Street sidewalk improvement project, which aims to enhance walkability and safety along the corridor. Nathan Schmidt, the transportation planning and mobility manager, presented the project, which has been scaled back to focus on improving existing sidewalks rather than adding new infrastructure. The estimated cost for the revised project is between $400,000 and $500,000, significantly lower than the original budget of $900,000.

Commission members expressed support for the project, recognizing the need for safer walking conditions. One commissioner noted the importance of addressing cross slopes that make sidewalks difficult to navigate, particularly for seniors and families. The commission unanimously voted to support the project, which will now move forward to the city council for approval.

As the meeting concluded, the commission reaffirmed its commitment to addressing traffic safety concerns in Carlsbad, with plans to revisit speed studies and explore additional measures to enhance community safety.
