Midland Entrepreneurial Challenge fuels local business growth and job creation

The Midland City Council meeting held on July 8, 2025, focused on the significant impact of the Midland Entrepreneurial Challenge (MEC) on local businesses and the community. The meeting featured several public comments from local entrepreneurs who shared their success stories and the transformative effects of the MEC.

Latoya, representing Toya's Precious Jewels Academy, highlighted her childcare center's growth, which has allowed her to serve over 50 additional families and employ 27 staff members. She emphasized the MEC's role in providing essential resources and support, stating that it not only benefited her business but also inspired other local entrepreneurs to participate and thrive. Latoya urged the council to continue supporting the MEC, noting its ripple effect on job creation and community stability.

Brian Shedd, the executive director of the Office of Innovation and Commercialization at UT Permian Basin, provided an overview of the MEC's achievements over the past seven years. He reported that 34 businesses have won funding since the program's inception in 2017, with over 80% still operational. Shedd noted the diverse industries represented in the challenge, including food, healthcare, and retail, all contributing to the quality of life in Midland. He expressed gratitude for the city's support of entrepreneurship.

Laura Smith, business director at the Birth Center of Midland, shared her experience as a winner of the MEC in February 2022. With the $100,000 award, her facility has successfully delivered 385 babies and created 13 jobs. Smith praised the MEC for equipping her with vital knowledge about financing and marketing, which has strengthened the local entrepreneurial ecosystem. She emphasized that the challenge not only launches new businesses but also fosters confidence among participants, enhancing the overall business climate in Midland.

The meeting underscored the council's commitment to supporting local entrepreneurship through the MEC, which has proven to be a catalyst for economic growth and community development.
