Library and Senior Center collaborate on new outdoor classroom design project

The Los Alamos County Library Board convened on July 7, 2025, to discuss the development of a new outdoor classroom space designed to enhance community programming. The proposed facility, situated between the library and the Betty E. Hart Senior Center, aims to accommodate up to 60 people and will feature a covered platform, built-in seating, and additional space for flexible seating arrangements.

The initiative, presented by a representative from Lloyd Associates, seeks to create a versatile environment for programs that may be too loud or messy for indoor settings. This outdoor classroom is intended to foster collaboration with local organizations, including the senior center and PEAC, to broaden the types of events offered to the community.

The idea for the outdoor classroom emerged from previous successful programs held in the area, particularly after the COVID-19 pandemic prompted a reevaluation of outdoor programming options. The library has previously utilized the space for events, and community interest was gauged through a listening session and a survey conducted earlier this year. The survey yielded a positive response, with 71% of participants indicating they would use the new space.

Key design considerations highlighted during the meeting included the importance of shade, sound mitigation, and accessibility. Community feedback also raised concerns about potential vandalism and the management of the space outside of organized events, which the board acknowledged as a common issue across county facilities.

The board is currently seeking support for the project as the design nears completion, with plans to incorporate community suggestions into the final layout. The meeting concluded with a call for continued public engagement and collaboration to ensure the outdoor classroom meets the needs of the community effectively.
