Residents demand traffic safety measures on Bayshore and Laguna streets

The Venice - Bayshore/Laguna Dr. Safety Alternatives Study Information Session held on July 7, 2025, focused on addressing community concerns regarding traffic safety in the area. Residents gathered to voice their opinions and suggestions, highlighting the urgent need for improvements.

The session began with Allison Williamson, a resident of El Dorado Drive, who expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to speak. She raised concerns about traffic speed on Laguna Drive, particularly near the Freedom Boat Club. Williamson noted the absence of a stop sign at Laguna and suggested the installation of one, along with a warning sign for the sharp curve, to enhance safety for pedestrians.

Joan Piper, representing several families from Bayshore Drive, echoed the need for safety measures. She emphasized that residents were willing to sacrifice their landscaping for the sake of improved safety. Piper proposed a simple solution of widening the road by three feet on either side, arguing that it would be a cost-effective way to address the issue.

Robert Rigge, a newcomer to Laguna Drive, shared his experiences as a runner in the area and expressed concern about potential safety hazards. He inquired about police and fire reports related to traffic incidents and suggested the installation of speed bumps at intersections to deter speeding.

Judy Collins, a long-time resident, reflected on the historical traffic issues in the area. She noted that previous measures, such as the installation of stop signs, had helped slow traffic but acknowledged ongoing safety concerns.

Throughout the meeting, residents consistently highlighted the need for immediate action to improve safety on Bayshore and Laguna Drive. The discussions underscored a collective desire for practical solutions that prioritize pedestrian safety and traffic management. The session concluded with a commitment from city officials to consider the residents' feedback as they move forward with the safety alternatives study.
