The contract, which spans from May 25, 2011, to May 25, 2031, is expected to generate approximately $7 million in revenue. This initiative is part of a broader effort to connect California's educational institutions through the California Research and Education Network (CalREN), a high-capacity fiber optic network designed to facilitate collaboration and research among universities, schools, and libraries across the state.

During the meeting, officials highlighted the importance of this network for UCSF, which will benefit from increased bandwidth and flexibility to accommodate its growing data needs. The Department of Technology will install and maintain dark fiber strands connecting nine UCSF locations, ensuring a resilient and diverse path for data transmission. The agreement includes one-time installation charges and annual recurring fees, which are adjusted for inflation. For 2024, the recurring charge is set at $412,000. This financial structure aims to provide sustainable funding for the ongoing maintenance and expansion of the fiber optic network.

Additionally, the meeting addressed the retroactive nature of the contract, which arose from a series of amendments and inflation adjustments over the years. The new department head emphasized the importance of reviewing all revenue agreements to ensure proper approvals are in place.
