Bayview Hunters Point Commission approves two mixed use designs with affordable housing

The San Francisco City Council has taken a significant step towards revitalizing the Bayview Hunters Point area by conditionally approving schematic designs for two mixed-use residential and retail buildings. The first project, located at Candlestick Point South Block 6A, will feature 128 residential units, including 13 below market rate, alongside approximately 16,600 square feet of ground-floor retail space.

In a related decision, the council also approved plans for a second building at Point South, Block 8A, which will include 127 residential units—again with 13 designated as below market rate—and around 12,500 square feet of retail space, plus an additional 5,000 square feet for community use. Both projects are part of the Hunters Point Shipyard Disposition and Development Agreement and are expected to enhance local economic opportunities while addressing housing needs.

The approvals come with environmental review findings in accordance with the California Environmental Quality Act, ensuring that development aligns with sustainability standards. Akashika McKinney, who presented the item, noted that these approvals mirror a previous decision made by the Commission in March for another mixed-use development in the area, which also emphasized inclusionary housing and community facilities.

These developments mark a crucial advancement in the ongoing efforts to transform the Bayview Hunters Point neighborhood, promising to bring both residential options and retail amenities to the community.
