A petition for a special use permit to construct a new fellowship hall behind Grace Fellowship Church in Sublette, Illinois, received unanimous support during the Lee County Zoning Board of Appeals meeting on July 3, 2025. The proposal, which includes modernizing the church with a fire escape and adding facilities for the growing congregation, was backed by both the village planning commission and the Sublette board, as confirmed by an email from the village mayor.
Bruce Papich, a church member and building commission member, outlined the plans, emphasizing the need for additional classrooms and restrooms to accommodate the church's expanding activities. The proposed fellowship hall will feature a portico for easy access, particularly for elderly and disabled members, and will include a wheelchair lift for improved accessibility.
The church, established in 1858, has been operating as Grace Fellowship since 2019, after moving from Amboy. Papich highlighted the historical significance of the church and its role in the community, stating that the enhancements would not only improve the church's facilities but also benefit the surrounding area.
No objections were raised during the meeting, and the zoning administrator confirmed that all necessary documentation, including public hearing notices and correspondence from the mayor, would be included in the official record. The board's approval marks a significant step forward for the church's development plans, with expectations for the construction to begin once compliance with building regulations is confirmed.
