Scott County officials are exploring the possibility of allowing street legal special purpose vehicles (SPVs), commonly known as ATVs and UTVs, to operate on certain county roads. During the Scott County Fiscal Court meeting on July 3, 2025, discussions centered on the potential benefits and community feedback regarding this ordinance.
The proposed ordinance would permit SPVs equipped with safety features such as roll cages, blinkers, and safety harnesses to navigate local roads. While two individuals expressed support for the initiative, officials emphasized the importance of gathering broader community input before moving forward. To facilitate this, a questionnaire will be shared on social media, allowing residents to voice their opinions and concerns.
Key questions in the survey will assess whether residents own or operate SPVs, their support for the ordinance, and perceived benefits such as convenience for local travel and potential economic impacts through tourism. The survey will also address concerns related to road safety, noise, and infrastructure damage.
Sheriff Nittles clarified that while the law requires a valid driver's license for SPV operation, it does not mandate helmet use. The ordinance would also consider restrictions on where these vehicles could operate, particularly on roads with speed limits above 45 miles per hour.
As Scott County moves forward with this initiative, officials are committed to ensuring that community voices are heard, aiming for an informed decision that balances safety and recreational opportunities for residents. The feedback gathered from the questionnaire will play a crucial role in shaping the final ordinance.
