Historical insights shared at Phoenix Masonic Hall centennial celebration

The Phoenix Masonic Temple is set to celebrate its cornerstone rededication ceremony in February 2025, marking a significant moment in the city's history. During a recent government meeting, officials highlighted the historical importance of the Masonic Hall, which was originally located at the center of Phoenix's first town site. This location, at 32 South Central, symbolizes the roots of the community, as it was the focal point when Phoenix was just beginning to grow.

In 1925, Phoenix was a burgeoning city with a population of over 30,000, yet it lacked many modern amenities we take for granted today. The meeting revealed fascinating insights into the city's past, including the fact that there were only 9,252 telephones in service at that time, and air conditioning was still in its infancy. Attendees learned that the first municipal airport was established at what is now McDowell Road, and the first stoplight was still a year away.

The discussions also touched on the Masons' commitment to honoring their history and heritage, with a poignant reminder that future generations will look back on how today's community preserves its legacy. Tyler Vance, director of collections from the George Washington Masonic National Memorial, expressed gratitude for the support from Arizona Masons, which aids in the restoration of their memorial.
