First on the agenda was the Maryland Cook rezone request, which sought to change the zoning designation of a specific lot from low-density residential (R1) to medium-density residential (R2). City Planner Natalie Burcheck explained that this amendment would align the lot with surrounding properties already designated as R2, facilitating consistent development in the area. The commission unanimously approved the rezone after confirming that there were no public comments or concerns regarding the change.
Next, the commission addressed the community orchard rezone, which aims to convert a portion of land from unzoned and community commercial (CC) to public (P) to allow the park district to establish a community orchard. Although this rezone had previously been approved, it was brought back for a second reading due to advertising errors. Burcheck noted that while public comments requested a fence along the orchard's eastern border, staff did not support this requirement, citing municipal code standards. The commission again voted in favor of the rezone, emphasizing the importance of community green spaces.
In addition to these zoning discussions, the meeting included a report from Engineering and Community Development Director Skoloscek, highlighting a busy year for planning and development in Dickinson. With 20 applications processed and multiple projects underway, the city is gearing up for a bustling construction season in 2025. Skoloscek also mentioned the approval of a grant for the Northwest Regional Pond project, which will be discussed in the upcoming meeting.
