Newark Council approves 30-year tax abatement for affordable senior housing project

The Newark Municipal Council convened on July 1, 2025, to address several key agenda items, focusing on infrastructure improvements, water treatment, and community development initiatives.

The meeting began with a discussion on the execution of a contract change order for the rehabilitation of the Pequana Aqueduct. Council members raised questions regarding the specifics of the project, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the city's water infrastructure.

In a significant development, the council discussed an ordinance granting a 30-year tax abatement for the Sheila Y. Oliver Senior Housing Community. This project aims to construct a five-story residential building that will provide 100% affordable housing for seniors, consisting of 48 units. Of these, 42 units will be available for rent at 60% of the Area Median Income (AMI), while five units will be dedicated to seniors with special needs at 20% of AMI, located in the South Ward.
